In a rematch of the Medibank International in Sydney, (3) Kim Clijsters of Belgium tries to knock off (9) Na Li of China. Li hadn’t been close to losing in Melbourne until her semifinal clash with (1) Carolina Wozniacki of Denmark who had a match point during the second set. The Chinese woman diverted the Dane’s upset bid (yes Li was favored) 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Clijsters, conversely, has been pushed to three tiebreakers but has not dropped a set during the two-week Slam. As nearly everybody’s favorite to win Melbourne, Aussie Kim would like nothing more than to capture revenge against the only woman to beat her this year. The Chinese woman has won five of the last seven sets against Clijsters who leads the head-to-head 4-2. However, pressure may get to both women. Li is the first Chinese woman to ever reach a Grand Slam final while the Belgian is trying to win her second straight Slam and fourth ever Aussie Open. Since in my women’s preview I was expecting someone to dethrone Clijsters, I won’t back away from that bold prediction.
