It was a difficult choice that Michael Clarke had to make on his debut as Test captain, and he batted first. But if that was the brave and correct decision at the toss, it was looking horribly wrong when showers dictated that afternoon conditions were all in favour of England’s seamers, until rain ended play.
This England team may look a likeable, even lovable, bunch of chaps who smile and occasionally dance. But they are developing the killer instinct that world champions have. Firstly, when Phil Hughes and Shane Watson were nearing lunch with their first-wicket stand unbroken, then when the debutant Usman Khawaja was rattling along with Watson, England were slipping: the prospect began to dawn of their having to bat out the last day on a turner to win the series. Instead they cut a couple of throats.
